Top Notch Photogs

Two outstanding photojournalists will be on hand Monday to talk to you about making a profession of photography. Both are teaching here at the J-School this semester while Keith Graham is on sabbatical.

Erik Petersen has been photographing life in Montana since the late 1990s.

Erik has garnered many state, regional and national awards for his work, including being named NPPA's best newspaper Photographer of the Year two years in a row throughout Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, Colorado and Western Canada.

Erik was a staff photographer for five years at the Livingston Enterprise and seven years at the Bozeman Daily Chronicle before leaving to pursue a freelance business.
He now photographs for state and national magazines and newspapers, as well as traveling annually to Pakistan and Afghanistan to document the work of Central Asia Institute, an NGO working to educate children in those countries.

Michael Albans is a professional photographer and photojournalist who spent most of his professional career in New York City. For 13 years he was a staff photographer for the New York Daily News, covering news, sports, and the aftermath of 9/11. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, and many other newspapers and books.

Michael now lives in Missoula with his wife, two children and his "beloved" Great Dane. He's embraced the western Montana life and loves being outdoors.

  1. Question for both photographers:
What is your favorite type of photography/what do you like to cover most?
What is your life's philosophy or credo and how does that translate to your photography?

  2. I have a question for both photographers. How do you feel about certain news publications such as the Chicago Sun Times' decision to rid themselves of staff photographers in exchange for iReporting. Do you have an answer to this in terms of keeping yourselves employed.

  3. I'm wondering how the transition to Montana life was for Michael. Missoula is much different than a city in New York, and while he may be embracing it, I wonder how easy of a transition it was for his family and his career to move here?

  4. Question for both photographers: Needless to say, photography is very competitive market. What are tips for finding your niche?
