Under the resources tab you can find LGBT terminology, a tip sheet on LGBT coverage and several other resources.
Using the the term "gay" or "lesbian" is preferred over the term "homosexual."
"Sexual orientation" is preferred over "sexual "sexual preference."
"LGBT right opponent" is preferred over "homophobia."
"Transgender" is preferred over "transexual."
Reasons to ask if someone is gay:
1. It adds context to the story.
2. It is central to the story.
Reason to NOT ask if someone is gay:
1. It would cause harm to the subject.
2. It is merely for sexual reasons or to sensationalize the story.
3. Would you include the same information if the subject were heterosexual?
Remember, it is definitely ok to ask. Many members of the LGBT community are more than comfortable discussing their lives. Just remember to stay informed and stay updated on terminology before interviewing.
Don't have much to say on this.
ReplyDeleteOne thing, though. I find it interesting that 'transgendered' is now preferred over 'transexual'. Gender is an action. Defined by culture and society. Sex is a physical characteristic. Genitals, reproductive organs, etc.
Seems like transgendered would be preferable, but what the hell do I know.
